This paper describes a theoretical prediction and an experimental study on the axial compressive strength of carbon fiber/epoxy (CFRP) laminated cylinder. Both of buckling and fracture strength which are dependent on the lamination angle are considered to evaluate the axial compressive strength values. The coupling effects are taken into consideration to predict the buckling strength. Three kinds of fracture mechanisms are used to predict the fracture strength. Then the strength values are theoretically predicted. Axial compression tests are carried out to using four types of test specimens with varied lamination angles. In the results of the experimental tests, both buckling and fracture behaviors are observed judging from measured strain of cylindrical surface, when the lamination angle has small inclination to axial direction. A distinct shear fracture along the fiber are observed with a large lamination angle. A qualitative agreement is confirmed between theoretically predicted strength values and experimental results.
