This paper presents the impact absorbing characteristics of aluminum honeycomb cell under axial impact loading. The enlarged models of hexagonal unit cell, which decide the impact absorbing characteristics of honeycomb panel, were used. FEM numerical analysis was carried out to investigate the similarity in the impact absorbing characteristics, between the honeycomb cell model and the honeycomb panel. Static and dynamic axial loading tests were performed with changing the configuration parameters of cell under various conditions. The result of the FEM analysis agrees with the experimental result in the case of static loading and it is confirmed that the honeycomb cell model has a similarity in impact absorbing characteristic to the honeycomb panel. Experimental results are as follows : (1) The honeycomb cell has shorter limit of height to use as impact absorber; (2) The velocity depends on the average compressive stress of honeycomb cell; and (3) The increasing of energy absorption quantity was recognized on multi-layered cell model, which intends the improvement of impact absorbing characteristics.
