The hollow rectangular bar were commonly used in the structural members for automobiles, however the study of the impact torsional problem for these members based on the wave theory had not been published to date. In this study, the impact torsional behaviors of aluminum bars with hollow rectangular and square cross section were investigated in terms of a falling weight method. The impact torsional angle measured by the impact plastic torsional experiment and the maximum elastic shearing strain by the impact elastic torsional experiment were increased with increasing the impact velocity. The shearing strains measured at the centers of the narrow side and the wide side were almost equal under a static torsion, the former was larger than the latter in the case of impact torsion. The reasons can be understood by considering the interference effect of strain waves. It is shown that these behaviors in the case of impact torsion are very complicated and quite different from these in the static case.
