Characteristics of Scintillation Phenomena on 12GHz Earth-Space Paths

For domestic satellite communication, Ku band frequencies are normally employed because the Ku band involves high antenna elevation angles with minimal wave interference with other countries. At present, small aperture antennas are widely used to receive broadcasting satellite waves. During rainfall, the Ku band is liable to generate scintillation of as high as several decibels. This can increase the bit error rate in digital link. When frequencies are high, scintillation can cause the signal level to fluctuate widely. These are serious problems for keeping high reliability of satellite communication. We measured scintillation with antennas of different elevation angles installed in different places. As a result we found a number of new phenomena : (1) There is a strong correlation between the generation of scintillation and antenna elevation angle; (2) The occurrence number of scintillation increases as temperature increases; and (3) Cumulative time distribution of scintillation amplitude does not show Gaussian distribution. This paper discusses scintillation characteristics based on our observed data.
