THE CHARACTERISTICS OF SATELLITE SIGNAL IN KU-BAND MEASURED FROM THAICOM

This paper presents the studies of the down link satellite characteristics signal from Thaicom1 and Thaicom2, both transmissions are in Ku-band with different polarization. Thaicom1 transmits in horizontal polarization while Thaicom2 transmits in vertical polarization. The data are analyzed in two cases, the first is analyzed by the diurnal scintillation characteristic of down link signal and the second is analyzed by the receiving signal attenuation with respect to rain rate. The results of the scintillation phenomena in Ku-band frequently occurred in day time which caused by the variation of the temperature and Refractivity, while in the night time the temperature and refractivity rather constant, then the scintillation occurred less than day time. The other observation found that the attenuation levels of receiving signal from Ku-band are varied due to rain rate. Received signal level decrease about 3.5 dB/km at the rain rate 50 mm./hr.
