THE VARIABILITY OF TOTAL IONOSPHERIC ELECTRON CONTENT IN THAILAND

At present, satellite communications are important to use in every day communication. But there are some effects from ionosphere, especially in L band and S band. One type of effect is scintillation, which due to the variation of structures and electron density in each region of the ionosphere that vary on the times of the day and other factors. This paper presents the variation of total lonospheric electron content (TEC) in Bangkok Thailand at latitude 13°43'N, longitude 100°47'E near the magnetic equator and Chiangmai at latitude 18°48'N, longitude 98°57'E. This experiment is a part of the PARTNERS project of MPT Japan. Using the correlation of different time delay of 2 L-band signals from GPS satellite and determined to TEC value. The results show that, the first, the seasonal variational of TEC in Thailand, the maximum variation are in May and October, TEC value is about 53×10^lt16gt electrons/m^lt2gt and the minimum are in August and December. The second, the diurnal variation of TEC, the lowest is just before sunrise and peak during 1300-1500 LT. and there are the TEC enhancement near 1900-2100 LT. The standard deviation (SD) of TEC data in day time is about 15%, in night time is about 25%, the peak of day is in the night time during 1900-2300 LT about 40-60%, because the irregularity of electron density in ionosphere in night time more than day time and that maybe a factor for scintillation. Furthermore, the comparison of TEC data between Changmai and Bangkok shows the good correlation depend on season.
