The current social backgrounds of school refusal (53 cases) are the phenomenally recognized characteristics. Firstly, they are the members of nuclear family residing in cities. Secondly, they are the students of large-scaled schools (so-called mammoth schools). Thirdly, their school records are of average standard. Analysis of the intrafamilial interaction and behavior to school and society in two typical cases of school refusal presented in this paper indicates the following features. Firstly, the children and their parents have a common view of life and so there is no contradiction between them. Secondly, when confronted with adversity in school records, their aspiration to be an elite breaks down. As a result, they would feel too depressed to expect the help of teachers or friends in mammoth school and eventually cannot help feeling confined to solitary isolation. Thirdly, however, because of the common worth standard, their parents are inhospitable to the anxieties of children. It results in the increase of tension in the family. From the above, we conclude school refusal to be the pathology of social phenomena.
