From five weeks of age, stroke-prone spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHRSP) were fed diets based on Chlorella (Chlorella vulgaris E-25), Euglena (Euglena gracilis Z) and brewer's yeast (Saccaromyces carlsbergensis) containing 22% crude protein. The Chlorella diet resulted in reductions in blood pressures, in plasma renin activity (PRA) levels, cerebral stroke lesions, hypertensive vascular lesions in the heart, kidneys, testes and adrenals, and an amelioration in the decrease in aorta elastin content (i.e. aging), plus an obvious elongation of life-spans. These changes were accompanied by slight electronmicroscopical changes in the mesenteric arteries. The Euglena diet resulted in reductions in cerebral stroke lesions and an obvious elongation of life-spans. It did not so obviously reduce increases in blood pressures, but did, inhibit an elevation in PRA levels and a decrease in aortic elastin (i.e. aging) to a certain extent. This group also showed lower proportions of polar amino acids in elastin and fewer changes in electronmicroscopical findings in the mesenteric arteries. The yeast diet resulted in only slight reductions in blood pressures, cerebral stroke lesions and elongation of life-spans. PRA levels and aortic elastin also changed only slightly. In conclusion, it may be said, when used as protein sources, Chlorella, Euglena and brewer's yeast are effective in preventing cerebral stroke and hypertensive vascular lesions, and thereby exert an obvious positive effect in elongating life-spans. Chlorella is the most effective of these three, with Euglena being second.
