ウマインフルエンザAウイルス(EIV)はウマにおいて、その高い伝染性のため最も重要な病原体の一つである。EIVは他のインフルエンザAウイルスのように、ヘマグルチニンと細胞表面の受容体の末端シアル酸との相互作用を経由して宿主の標的細胞に結合する。2004年のアメリカでは、EIVの種間伝達が原因となりイヌの間で呼吸性疾患が大発生した。EIV由来ウイルスは急速に広がり、アメリカでのイヌの風土病になりそうである。このレビューはEIVとアメリカで感染したイヌより分離されたEIV由来ウイルスの病原論と受容体結合の特徴についての認識を検討するものである。
