Irreversible Phase Separation to Antiferromagnetic and Spin-Singlet States in the Square-Planar Metal-Cluster Compound V4S9Br4

V4S9Br4 is a unique magnetic metal-cluster compound with square-planar V4 clusters. Systematic magnetic measurements revealed spontaneous phase separation to antiferromagnetic (A) and spin-singlet (S) phases below the Néel temperature T_{\text{N}}\simeq 18 K. The S phase appears only when the crystal is larger in size than a certain criterion, and is easily stabilized under hydrostatic pressure, suggesting that, although the ground-state phase at ambient pressure is the A phase, the A and S phases are nearly degenerate. This spontaneous phase separation is probably due to internal inhomogeneities in the crystal, in cooperation with possible distortion of the A-phase matrix below T_{\text{N}}. The irreversible behavior known at ambient pressure is explained as the variation in the A/S ratio associated with crystal cracking during heat cycles.
