In this paper we describe the experimental study the behavior of Al2O3 particles in an electrostatic field without corona generation. Closely spaced polarized Al2O3 particles suspended in the gas phase attract each other due to the dipole–dipole interactions and align parallel to the imposed electric field in the form of particle chains. Then the particle chains deposit onto an alumina substrate under the action of electrostatic force and gravitational force. Finally, a three-dimensional network layer composed of particle chains, a structure peculiar to electrostatic deposition, covered the substrate. After sintering, a porous layer with a network structure was obtained. The results show that the formation of a chain aggregate of dielectric particles can be controlled with electrostatic forces. The deposition of the chain aggregates on a material surface will provide a novel and promising option for the fabrication of porous ceramics.
