The effect of solvent and feed rod composition on optical and electrical properties of KNbO3 crystals grown by the traveling solvent floating zone (TSFZ) method was studied. As-grown crystals were crack-free, blue, semiconductive and had a multidomain structure. Optical transmission decreased with increasing potassium content in the solvent and feed rod, while the absorption edge remained unchanged at 380 nm. Two discontinuities of electrical conductivity over the range from room temperature to 500°C were observed. These transition temperatures decreased with increasing potassium content, whereas the activation energy over the range from room temperature to 100°C remained unchanged at 0.2 eV.
