Analysis of Macroscopic Stability as an Eigenvalue Problem of Beam Propagation in LIB Fusion

Stability of LIB propagation in a background plasma is investigated numerically in relation to its rotating velocity. First, a steady solution is obtained. The linearized equations which govern a Fourier component of disturbances induced on the steady solution constitute an eigenvalue problem. The dispersion relation as the eigenvalue is solved numerically through the eigenequations by dividing the beam radius into many subdivisions, and by applying the difference equations (transformed from the linearized differential equations) to each subdivision. The maximum growth rate of disturbances appears in the fundamental mode in the radial direction and in the lowest Fouriercomponent with respect to the wave numbers in the azimuthal direction. It is indicated here that the moderate rotation of the beam stabilizes the beam propagation.
