The chlorobis(<I>N</I>-alkylsalicylideneaminato)manganese(III) complexes, Mn<SUP>III</SUP>(<I>N</I>-Rsai)<SUB>2</SUB>Cl, react with hydrogen chloride to give the corresponding dichloromanganese(IV) complexes, Mn<SUP>IV</SUP>(<I>N</I>-Rsai)<SUB>2</SUB>Cl<SUB>2</SUB>, as deep green crystals; R can be <I>n</I>-C<SUB>3</SUB>H<SUB>7</SUB>, <I>n</I>-C<SUB>4</SUB>H<SUB>9</SUB>, <I>i</I>-C<SUB>4</SUB>H<SUB>9</SUB>, <I>n</I>-C<SUB>6</SUB>H<SUB>13</SUB>, <I>c</I>-C<SUB>6</SUB>H<SUB>11</SUB>, <I>n</I>-C<SUB>8</SUB>H<SUB>17</SUB>, <I>n</I>-C<SUB>12</SUB>H<SUB>25</SUB>, <I>n</I>-C<SUB>18</SUB>H<SUB>37</SUB>, CH<SUB>2</SUB>C<SUB>6</SUB>H<SUB>5</SUB>, or CH<SUB>2</SUB>CH<SUB>2</SUB>C<SUB>6</SUB>H<SUB>5</SUB>. These complexes were characterized by the magnetic susceptibilities, electronic spectra, infrared spectra, and cyclic voltammograms. The complexes (R=<I>n</I>-C<SUB>12</SUB>H<SUB>25</SUB> and <I>n</I>-C<SUB>18</SUB>H<SUB>37</SUB>) are found to be stable toward water in the solid state. A <I>trans</I>, six-coordinate configuration is proposed for these Mn(IV) complexes on the basis of the infrared spectra.
