The copper(II) complex of salicylideneamine (salamH) reacts with molecular oxygen in pyridine to give the 2-cyanophenolato complex, [Cu(2-CNphO)<SUB>2</SUB>(py)<SUB>2</SUB>], in good yield, where 2-CNphOH and py denote 2-cyanophenol and pyridine, respectively. This complex was characterized by the infrared and electronic spectra and by its magnetic susceptibilities, and was compared with the authentic complex, [Cu(2-CNphO)<SUB>2</SUB>(py)<SUB>2</SUB>]. The mechanism for the oxidation of the coordinated imino groups is discussed.
