A lipophilic 14-crown-4 derivative bearing two dinitrophenol moieties was synthesized and its ion selectivity was elucidated on cation extraction from a basic aqueous phase into an organic phase. The crown ether derivative was found to possess preferences for Ca<SUP>2+</SUP> and Sr<SUP>2+</SUP> as well as Li<SUP>+</SUP>.
