A new rhodium(III) complex with <I>o</I>-phenylenediamine, <I>trans</I>-[RhCl<SUB>2</SUB>{C<SUB>6</SUB>H<SUB>4</SUB>(NH<SUB>2</SUB>)<SUB>2</SUB>}<SUB>2</SUB>]ClO<SUB>4</SUB> was synthesized and the reaction with oxidizing agents studied. Due to coordination with the rhodium(III) ion the <I>o</I>-phenylenediamine (opd) was greatly stabilized against oxidation and the complex was oxidized slowly by periodate via intermediate radical complex to bis(<I>o</I>-benzoquinone diimine)dichlororhodium(III) complex which decomposed to the final products.
