The reactions of 1,1-disubstituted ethenes with acetoacetamide or <I>N</I>-substituted acetoacetamides, and molecular oxygen in the presence of manganese(III) acetate gave a mixture of <I>c</I>-4- and <I>t</I>-4-carbamoyl-3-methyl-1,2-dioxan-<I>r</I>-3-ols in good yields. Effects of substituents in the alkenes as well as in the carbamoyl group in the acetoacetamides were observed. Stereochemistry and the reactivity of the 4-carbamoyl-3-methyl-1,2-dioxan-3-ols are discussed.
