Four 2-hydroxystilbenes (Ia∼Id) were oxidized with lead tetraacetate to give corresponding 3-arylbenzofurans (IIa∼IId) in moderate yields. IId and IIe were also obtained by the reactions of Id and Ie respectively with manganic acetate in poor yields.
