Photolysis of phenylazo <I>p</I>-tolyl sulfone and <I>p</I>-chlorophenylazo <I>p</I>′-tolyl sulfone in aromatic solvents at room temperature was investigated. The products were analyzed, and the isomer distribution and partial rate factors in arylation of mono-substituted benzenes were determined. The results indicate that the photolysis involves formation of aryl radicals and <I>p</I>-tolylsulfonyl radicals.
