Kinetic Studies of the Dissociation and the Recombination Reaction in Aqueous Solutions of Monocarboxylic Acids by Means of Ultrasonic Absorption Measurements

The ultrasonic absorptions were measured in aqueous solutions of acetic, propionic, butyric, valeric, and chloroacetic acids as a function of the pH over the frequency range from 1.5 to 220 MHz at 25°C. From the dependences of μ′<SUB>max</SUB> and <I>f<SUB>r</SUB></I> on pH, it was deduced that the perturbation of the ionization equilibrium of acids was the cause of the excess absorptions in dilute aqueous solutions. The kinetic parameters thus calculated were compared with those obtained by other methods.
