Crystals of (−)-2,2′-bisbromomethyl-l′-binaphthyl have been subjected to crystal structure analysis in order to determine the absolute configuration of optically active 1,1′-binaphthyl derivatives. The crystals are orthorhombic, space group P2<SUB>1</SUB>2<SUB>1</SUB>2<SUB>1</SUB> with <I>Z</I>=4 and the lattice constants are; <I>a</I>=10.360, <I>b</I>=13.052, <I>c</I>=13.178 Å. The structure was solved by the heavy atom method and the final <I>R</I> index was 0.064. The absolute configuration was determined as (<I>S</I>)-configuration by utilizing the anomalous dispersion effect of bromine atom.
