The EMF of a solid electrolyte galvanic cell on the formation of orthoferrites, LnFeO<SUB>3</SUB>, was measured for Ln=Y, Gd and Sm at 1200–1400 K. The free energy change of the (1/2)Fe<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>3</SUB>+(1/2)Ln<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>3</SUB>→LnFeO<SUB>3</SUB> reaction was calculated.
