α-K<SUB>8</SUB>SiW<SUB>11</SUB>O<SUB>39</SUB>·13H<SUB>2</SUB>O is cubic with the space group P\bar43m and <I>a</I>=10.654(1) Å; <I>D</I><SUB>m=</SUB>4.40 g cm<SUP>−3</SUP>, <I>D</I><SUB>x=</SUB>4.42 g cm<SUP>−3</SUP> for <I>Z</I>=1. The crystal contains a discrete SiW<SUB>11</SUB>O<SUB>39</SUB><SUP>8−</SUP> ion, which is almost identical to α-SiW<SUB>12</SUB>O<SUB>40</SUB><SUP>4−</SUP> anion in shape and in size but one tungsten atom and the exterior terminal oxygen atom are absent. The position of the vacant hole could not be located because of the seemingly high symmetry of T<SUB>d</SUB> of the polyanion caused by the orientational randomness of the anions. The silicon atom at the center of the polyanion lies on the origin of the cubic lattice and the potassium cations linking α-SiW<SUB>11</SUB>O<SUB>39</SUB><SUP>8−</SUP> ions are at the middle points of adjacent polyanions.
