By visible and ESR spectroscopies, the appearance of <I>o</I>-dinitrobenzene anion radical has been demonstrated for the replacement of one nitro group of <I>o</I>-dinitrobenzene by hydroxide ion in aqueous dimethyl sulfoxide. Kinetic studies have supported the suggestion that the anion radical is a precursor in the substitution reaction.
