Time-resolved ESR experiments have been carried out to elucidate the initial process in the photochemical reduction of aromatic nitro compounds. The first observation of CIDEP due to nitrobenzene anion radicals in the presence of an electron donor proved that radical generation takes place through a triplet mechanism.
