A convenient method for the preparation of β-acetyl-γ-substituted-γ-butyrolactones (III) and γ-acetyl-δ-substituted-δ-valerolactones (IV) is described. It was established that α-angelicalactone (I) and 3,4-dihydro-6-methyl-2<I>H</I>-pyran-2-one(II) react with various aldehydes in the presence of boron trifluoride etherate (BF<SUB>3</SUB>·OEt<SUB>2</SUB>) to afford the corresponding γ and δ-lactones, respectively, in good yields.
