On the Solubility and the Velocity of Dissolution of Corundum under Hydrothermal Conditions

The solubility of corundum was measured under hydrothermal conditions. The equilibrium solubility seems independent of the pressure. The temperature term, <I>f</I>(<B>T</B>), the ratio of the gram equivalent of dissolved corundum to that of sodium hydroxide in the solution, was as follows:<BR>(<U>Remark: Graphics omitted.</U>)<BR>The velocity of dissolution was proportional to the surface area of the corundum crystal and the total gram equivalent of sodium hydroxide in the solution. This is shown as<BR>\fracd(<I>x</I><SUB>cor</SUB>⁄<I>x</I><SUB>OH</SUB>)d<I>t</I>=<I>kS</I>(<I>x</I><SUB>∞</SUB><SUP>cor</SUP>⁄<I>x</I><SUB>OH</SUB>－<I>x</I><SUB>cor</SUB>⁄<I>x</I><SUB>OH</SUB>)<BR>The velocity constant was as follows:<BR>(<U>Remark: Graphics omitted.</U>)<BR>The nucleation of corundum may be initiated at the supersaturation ratio of 0.12 without seed.
