We reported two cases of cartilaginous and osseous choristoma of the tongue with a review of the literature.In Case 1, the patient, a 33-year-old woman, was referred to our hospital on Dec. 3, 1988. She had been aware of the mass on the tongue for 6 months, but had not undergone any treatment. At the first visit, the tumor was approximately 7mm in diameter and situated on the ventral surface of the tongue. The turnor was excised under local anesthesia. Histological investigation revealed this tumor to have the characteristics of hyaline cartilage. The histological diagnosis was cartilaginous choristoma of the tongue. In Case 2, the patient, a 27-year-old man, was referred to our hospital on Apr. 13, 1987. He had been aware of the mass on the tongue for 20 years, but had not undergone any treatment. At the first visit, the tumor was approximately 5mm indiameter and situated on the central dorsal surface of the base of thc tongue. The tumor was excised under general anaesthesia. Histological investigation revealed this tumor to have the characteristics of mature bone tissues. The histological diagnosis was osseous choristoma of the tongue.The most accepted theory of origin of these glossal lesions is ectopic embryonic rest or mesenchymal metaplasia.
