Xerophthalmia, or dry eye, is an uncomfortable affliction. The principle of parotid duct transfer is the use of parotid secretions as a continuous substitute for lacrimal secretions. Among the many causes are trachoma, traumatic injury of the lacrimal gland, and severe paralysis of the greater superficial petrosal nerve after Bell's palsy or due to the presence or removal of an intracranial tumor, such as an acoustic tumor. We performed parotid duct transfer on a 46-year-old male suffering from bilateral xerophthalmia. The method and postoperative course are discussed.
