Evaluation of Multi-disciplinary Treatment of Carcinoma of the Mesopharynx:An Analysis of 47 Cases

Forty-seven cases of carcinoma of the mesopharynx, treated from 1973 to 1981 at Gunma Cancer Center, were evaluated.1. The histological diagnosis was well differentiated squamous cell carcinoma in 37 and poorly differentiated squamous cell carcinoma in 10 cases.2. The site of the carcinoma was the lateral wall in 31 cases (65.9 per cent), the anterior wall in 9 cases, the superior wall in 5 cases and the posterior wall in 2 cases.3. The TN classification was T1 in 2 cases, T2 in 14 cases, T3 in 24 cases and T4 in 7 cases. The N distribution was as follows: NO in 27 cases and N1, N2 or N3 in 20 cases.4. The most common treatment was intraarterial chemotherapy with 5-Fu combined with external irradiation, which was performed in 15 cases (31.9 per cent), then external irradiation alone in 14 cases (29.7 per cent), external irradiation combined with radium therapy in 8 cases (17.0 per cent) and external irradiation combined with cryosurgery in 5 cases (10.6 per cent).The five year cummulative survival rate was 35.3 per cent.Mesopharyngeal carcinomas are of various forms, so that the treatment policy cannot be standardized. Therefore multidisciplinary treatment should be used in this disease.
