The Untreated Adult Case of Vitamin-D Resistant Rickets with Spinal Cord Compression

On November 11, 1985 a forty-three-year-old man was admitted to our hospital with a chief complaint of gait disturbance. A thoracic myelogram showed a complete block from the sixth thoracic vertebra to the tenth. A decompression laminectomy was performed on November 18. The diagnosis of ossified yellow longitudinal ligament (OYL) was made.On the other hand, his physical examination showed a dwarf and bow-leg deformities, and his grandmother, mother and younger sister had also showed a same stature. The results of laboratory tests were as follows, calcium 4.7meq/l, inorganic phosphorus 2.1mg/dl and alkaline phosphatase 20.2 units.Roentgenographic examination revealed severe degenerative Osteo-arthritic changes, exostotic bone proliferation and OYL. These suggested that he was a rare case of untreated Vitamin-D resistant rickets with spinal cord comoression by OYL.
