The distribution of intraosseous vessels in the femoral head of spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) were investigated by means of microangiography and histology. Ten SHR at the age of 20 weeks were sacrified and those 20 femoral heads were examined for this study.The following three patterns of femoral heads were noted microangiographically: Type 1, the appearance with generally distributed epiphysis (10 limbs); Type 2, the appearance with partial defect in medial side of epiphysis (8 limbs); Type 3, the appearance with vessels penetrating growth plate (2 limbs). Those findings of vascular distribution were closely correlated with variable ossified region in the proximal epiphysis of the femur.The histology of Type 1 included normally ossified epiphysis. In Type 2 and 3 cases showed the sharp interruption of epiphyseal vessels, whose histology were accompanied by avascular necrotic region in the midportion of the epiphysis. The others of Type 2 showed the findings of merely retarded ossification in various extent. In Type 3, sporadic cartilaginous tissues were surrounded by ossified trabeculae, and small mass of avascular necrosis intervened among them histologically.The meaning of those findings in microangiography and histology in the femoral heads of SHR were discussed in this paper.
