Experience of treating familial hypophosphatemic rickets with activated vitamin D(1.ALPHA.-OH-D3).

In familial hypophosphatemic rickets the characteristic findings are a low serum phosphorus, a high alkaline phoshatase, an increased urinary excretion of phosphorus, and rachitic bone changes that are refractory to normal doses of vitimin D, differentiating it from vitimin dependent rickets. Historically, this condition was treated with high doses of vitimin D (D2, D3); however, in recent years activated vitimin D has been widely used and there have been increased reports of its therapeutic effects. Although various views concerning the appropriate dosages exist, there is a widespread acceptance that high dosages are most effective.With the opportunity to treat two patients with this condition, a through investigation was conducted to evaluate the clinical effects of treatment with the analogue of activated vitimin D, 1α-hydroxyvitamin D3 (1α-OH-D3) in combination with phosphate.
