The clinical utilities of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in the diagnosis of osteogenic and soft part tumors are recently recognized. We investigated the significances and some problems of MRI of the cartilaginous tumors. Ten patients were examined with the Signa 1.5-Tesla superconducting magnet. The following results were obtained.1) Calcificating lesions, which are the symptoms of cartilaginous tumors, were unclear on MRI. 2) In one case of benign tumor, tumor extent was more clearly demonstrated on MRI than that of plain X-ray. 3) As cortical invasions by tumors were poorly identified by MRI, we need both CT and MRI. 4) In the cases of chondrosarcoma, some have broad reactive zone, but others have little reactive zone. 5) Intramedullary extent and extraosseous extent were clearly demonstrated on T1 and T2 weighed images, respectively. We have to pay attention, however, to the unclear border of extraosseous extent shared with the reactive zones. 6) In the cases of chondrosarcoma, the tumor intensity on T2 weighed image tended to be higher than that of fat tissue around the tumor.
