Extracapsular Femoral Neck Fractures in the Elderly Mortality and Functional Results.

We reviewed 79 patients with extracapsular femoral neck fractures treated with Ender's technique 5 years after their operations. Every patient was more than 70 years old and their average age was 81.8 years. 15 patients were male and the other 64 patients were female.The one-year mortality rate was 18%. The rate of excellent or good functional results was 63% at one year, 47% at 2.5 years and 28% at 5 years.The risk factors correlated with the mortality and poor functional results as follows: (1) sex, (2) mobility before injury, (3) Kishi's (Adachi's) risk score, (4) liver dysfunction, (5) respiratory dysfunction, (6) serum-electrolite abnormalities, (7) dimentia, (8) parkinsonism and (9) the time from injury to surgery.
