Hemangioendothelioma of the Spine. A Case Report.

A case of hemangioendothelioma of the thoracic spine, which is a very rare tumor, is reported. She patient was a 13 year-old female. She complained of gait disturbances due to bilateral muscle weakness of her lower extremities and incontinence. On physical examination hypoesthesia below the Th 7 neurological level and hyperreflexia with pathological reflexes of the lower extremities were observed.X-rays showed sclerotic change of Th 7 vertebra with abscess-like shadow surrounding it. CT revealed expansile destruction of Th 7 vertebra and lamina. At first tuberculous spondylitis was suspected, but could not be confirmed. Two months after her first visit to our hospital, laminectomy at the level of Th 6-7 vertebrae was performed. Histologically, the tumor was low grade malignant hemangioendothelioma. Since myelopathy recurred after the first operation, vertebrectomy of Th 7 and bone grafting were performed one year later. The patient had slight myelopathy for about six months after the second operation but at present, the patient has no local recurrence and no functional disturbance.
