Study on Gastric Emptying in Patients with Peptic Ulcer

The pattern and the rate of gastric emptying were investigated in 38 patients with pepticulcer and 3 normal controls using the double sampling method (George, 1968). Indeedthis method was convenient and showed an excellent reproducibility, but was found not togive a correct volume remaining in the stomach when the gastric content became less than50ml. Therefore, the time when the gastric content decreased just to 100ml was determinedas the gastric emptying time.The pattern of gastric emptying assumed the following three attitudes, that is, exponential(49%), quadratic (27%), unclassified (24%) manner. These patterns depended on the verticaldistance from the gastric angle to the pyloric ring measured from X-ray pictures in the uprightposition, and the similar pattern was found in the same case at different ulcer stages.There was no significant difference of the gastric emptying time in the sites of ulcers andtheir healing stages. During periodical observations of the same case, the gastric emptyingtime decreased in patients with duodenal ulcer as the ulcer healed, but showed no definiterelation in gastric ulcer.
