Studies in 28 Cases of Congenital Cystic Dilatation of the Common Bile Duct in Adults:Roentgenological Features and a Union between the Choledochus and the Main Pancreatic Duct

Roentgenological features and their relations to clinical features have been studied in 28 adult patients with congenital cystic dilatation of the common bile duct.This disease may be divided into two groups, the extrahepatic type and the intra-and extrahepatic type, according to the location of cystic dilatation of the bile ducts.A union between the choledochus and the main pancreatic duct was found at a very high position in all patients in whom the ductal system could be studied, both the ducts forming a long common terminal duct, entered at the major papilla of Vater.The anomalous union can be divided into two types. In the first type, the main pancreatic duct joins the common bile duct just below the site of cystic dilatation. In the second, the distal end of cystic dilatation joins the main pancreatic duct through a short narrow segment.It has been found that the roentgenological features of the cystic dilatations, the age of onset and clinical symptoms are closely related to these two types of ductal union.
