Effect of Xylitol on Testicular Protein and RNA Biosynthesis of Rats

The effect of glucose and xylitol on protein synthesis in the testis of rats has been studied. Incorporation of precursors to testicular protein and RNA was increased by addition of glucose or xylitol to the incubation medium.<BR>Maximal stimulation of protein and RNA labeling was observed at a concentration of 9m<I>M</I> glucose and 20m<I>M</I> xylitol. Essentially there was no enhancement of protein synthesis by increasing amounts of glucose or xylitol up to 30 and 40m<I>M</I> respectively. A linear increase in specific activities of testicular protein occurred from 0 to 60 min in the presence of glucose or xylitol following which the rate of change in protein labeling slightly decreased to 120min. Glucose and xylitol increased testicular adenosine triphosphate (ATP) levels during the same period of incubation time as protein and RNA synthesis increased.<BR>The results appear to support a suggestion that xylitol in the uronate cycle stimulates the testicular protein biosynthesis in the similar mechanism by which glucose increases protein and RNA labeling in testes as the result of increasing production of ATP.
