In order to study the determination of yttrium by the flame emission and atomic absorption spectrometry using nitrous oxide-acetylene flame, the effects of several inorganic acids, common metal ions, and rare earth elements on the intensities of the emission and absorption of yttrium were investigated in detail. The experimental conditions are as follows: the analytical lines are 4077 Å or 4102 Å in the flame emission method, and 4102 Å in the atomic absorption method; the nitrous oxide gas flow rate, 6.7 <I>l</I>/min, and the acetylene gas flow rate, 4.6 <I>l</I>/min in both methods.<BR>The effects of several inorganic acids, common metal ions, and rare earth elements on the intensities of the emission and absorption of yttrium (200 ppm) are shown in Fig. 2, Fig. 3, and Fig. 4, respectively. As shown in Fig. 2, the intensities of the emission and absorption of yttrium decrease gradually with increasing concentration of hydrochloric acid; they increase in the presence of each of 0.31 <I>M</I> nitric acid, 10-33<I>M</I> perchloric acid, 10-31 <I>M</I> sulfuric acid, and 10-31 <I>M</I> phosphoric acid; they decrease in the presence of each of 3 <I>M</I> sulfuric acid and 3 <I>M</I> phosphoric acid. As shown in Fig. 3, they increase in the presence of high concentration (300010000 ppm) of each of Li, Na, K, Mg, Ca, Sr, Ba, Cr, Mn, Fe, Ni, Cu, Zn, and Pb; they decrease considerably in the presence of high concentration(300010000 ppm)of aluminum. As shown in Fig. 4, they increase with increasing concentration of each of the rare earth elements.<BR>The calibration curves for yttrium in the concentration range of 20500 ppm are prepared by both methods (Fig. 5 and Fig. 6). The calibration curves for yttrium alone are not linear but concave in both methods. Those obtained by adding 10000 ppm of potassium are convex in the flame emission method, and linear in the atomic absorption method. Those obtained by adding 10000 ppm of lanthanum are convex in both methods.<BR>The determination of yttrium in synthetic samples consisting of heavy rare earth mixtures (Gd, Tb, Dy, and Ho) and 0.130% of Y2O3 is performed by both methods. The found values of yttrium by both methods are in fair agreement with the theoretical values. In the determination of yttrium in real samples, the values (0.222% as Y2O3) obtained by both methods agree well, and the precision (coefficients of variation) is 0.94.9% in the flame emission method, and 1.17.1 % in the atomic absorption method.
