URINARY GLYCOSAMINOGLYCANS IN PREMATURE AND FULLTERM NEONATES

High polymer chondroitin (molecular weight more than 50, 000 Daltons) was detected in the urine of premature neonates. Ten and eleven days after birth, they constituted 21.5 and 14.0% of the total excreted glycosaminoglycans respectively. By contrast, high polymer partially or low sulfated chondroitin sulfate was not detected in the urine. Subsequently with extra-uterine life, sulfation increased and the amount of the high polymer fraction decreased to that excreted in the urine of full term neonates. Hyaluronic acid is not found in the urine of premature neonates for the first 10 days of life, though it is present in the urine of full term newborns.
