Enumeration of lymphocyte subpopulations during exacerbation and remission of inflammatory activity in patients with chronic active hepatitis type B.

Serial obserbation on lymphocyte subpopulations were made during the remission (SGPT 52.3±41.0IU/l), the initial or florid stage of exacerbation (SGPT 368±148IU/l), and the late stage of exacerbation (SGPT 135±139IU/l), in twelve patients with chronic type B hepatitis.<BR>Population of OKT3+ cells were unchanged in serial obserbation. OKT4+ cells in the initial or florid stage were greater in number than those in the late stage of exacerbation (p<0.01). OKT8+ cells decreased in the exacerbation stage. Therefore, the ratio of OKT4+ to OKT8+ cells was significantly increased in the initial or florid stage of exacerbation compared to that in the remission stage (p<0.001), and also in the late stage of exacerbation (p<0.05). OKT8+ cells increased in the liver in the exacerbation stage compared to in the remission stage (p<0.001).<BR>From these results, a conclusion was drawn that the change of T cell subpopulations in the peripheral blood and the increase of cytotoxic T cells in the liver during the stage of exacerbation play a role in the exacerbation of hepatitis.
