We surveyed plasmid DNAs in the 40 naturally occurring strains of Bacteroides melaninogenicus and found that three strains had two different plasmids in these cells. A strain of subsp. intermedius had 1.4 and 1.9 Mdal plasmids and two strains of subsp. melaninogenicus had 1.4 and 2.2 Mdal plasmids. We failed to identify any genetic characters mediated by these plasmids. But, through this study, we found that strains of subsp. intermedius and melaninogenicus were not different in their antibiotic susceptibilities and bacteriocin productions, and that a few strains were resistant to ampicillin and erythromycin.
