Factors Affecting Distribution of Nutrient in Tree Organs of Eucalyptus camaldulensis in Arid Lands of Western Australia

The establishment of technologies for large-scale afforestation in arid lands for carbon fixation is important. Arid lands can provide only small amount of water for plant growth, so effective water use is a very important issue. The objective of this study near Leonora, Western Australia, is the establishment of a method to estimate the amount of water required for tree growth. This method is based on nutrient flow in a tree, and it is necessary to examine the effects of various factors on the distribution of nutrients for the estimation of representative nutrient concentration as a whole organ of the object plant. In this report, the distribution of nutrients in a tree organ was examined for Eucalyptus camaldulensis, one of the typical species in the area. The distribution of nutrients in tree organs were considered to be caused by various factors such as organ-type (i.e., leaf, branch, trunk or bark), distance above ground of the sample, orientation of a tree, and height of the tree. However, it was clear that the nutrient concentration of each organ and allocation were important factors for the estimation of representative nutrient concentration as a whole tree organ. And it was shown that the calcium concentration clearly decreased, while potassium concentration increased with the distance from the bottom of the trunk.
