This investigation was designed to find the most important characters which were closely correlated with the yield (in mature tea garden) of clones for black tea.<BR>Phenotypic, genotypic and environmental correlation coefficients between yield and eight characters were computed from variance and covariance components. The eight characters included in this analysis were given in Fig. 1. Furthermore, path coefficient analysis (Wright, 1921) of the eight characters was conducted by means of analyzing a phenotypic correlation coefficient into direct and indirect components.<BR>High positive phenotypic and genotypic correlation coefficients were observed between yield and average length of flush shoot at pulcking, number of plucked shoots per unit area and width of row, respectively.<BR>The phenotypic and genotypic correlation coefficients agreed closely in each instance.<BR>From the results of the path coefficient analysis, it was found that the average length of flush shoot at plucking was main factor that exerted the greatest influence both directly and indirectly on the yield.<BR>Some examinations of the path diagram were carried on and the propriety of the diagram was confirmed.
