To accelerate and even the germination of tea seed, a few experiments were carried out on the germination test and some pre-treatments using the Japan varieties, the Assam hybrids and the Assam varieties.<BR>From the habitual outdoor germination test in 1961, it was observed that the germination percentage of the crossed seeds obtained from each cross combination varied widely from 0 to 93.6%. The period when over 90% germination of all the germinated seeds was accomplished was shown extending over 50 days (Fig. 1).<BR>The uneven germination was also observed concerning each cross combination.<BR>It was found with all varieties that the removal of the seed shell or damaging it accelerated the germination of embryo. The germination percentage of the intact seeds varied from high to low with the varieties used. The removal of the seed shell, however, greatly speeded up the germination and nearly 100% germination was given 20 days after treatment in almost all varieties (Table 1, Figs. 2 and 3). Cracking and splitting the seed shell also had somewhat accelerating effect on the germination.<BR>Cracking or removal of the shell of fallen seeds and subsequent soaking them in water for about one day, however, did not show so good germination as intact seeds did (Table 2). Storages of seeds for 20 days at 20°C, 7°C and room temperature showed the same effect on the germination and the later growth of seedlings (Table 3 and Fig. 3).<BR>Being stored in polyethylene bag at nearly 20°C, the seed shell began to split about 10 days after storage. These split seeds were transferred from 20°C to 6°C storage and stopped growing for a time. After all seeds splitted they were sown in germinating beds, and then they showed rapid elongation of root and even growth (Table 4 and Photograph). From the above results, it was concluded that this treatment was the most effective in the acceleration and evenness of the tea seed germination.
