Laying hens were fed pure crystalline β-carotene with or without supplementation of vitamin C, E and B12 and the rate of absorption of β-carotene was investigated.When pure β-carotene was given without any supplementation, its rate of absorption was found to be very low. When it was given supplementation of vitamin C in oil, the rate showed a remarkable increase.When pure β-carotene was given in the same oil solution with supplementation of vitamin E and B12, the similar increase was noted in the rate of β-carotene absorption. Such supplementation was found in the following experiment to have a good after-effect in the absorption of β-carotene for some days, even after cessation of supplementation. The favorable effect observed in the rate of carotene absorption in the present experiment was thought to have been brought about by the supplementa tion of vitamin E and B12 and some other unknown causes which should be investigated by further study.At the end of experimental feeding of β-carotene with supplementation of vitamin C, E and B12 the birds were fed again β-carotene without any supplementation. In this case, the rate of β-caro tene absorption was not the same as shown in the preceding period of the same feeding, but rather a little higher. This fact indicates that some residual effect of the vitamin C, E and B12 given in the preceding periods might have worked favorably on β-carotene absorption.
