During hydrolysis of lignocellulose, various compounds which inhibit the bioconversion of xylose to xylitol are formed or released. To remove these inhibitor, an acid hydrolyzate prepared from Japanese white birch wood was treated with four different carbonaceous sorbents. Sorbents include a dehydration production prepared from the birth wood hydrolysis residue, a steam-activated charcoal, a ZnCl_2-activated charcoal, and mangrove charcoal. Except for acetic acid, furfural and low molecular weight phenolics were successfully removed by the sorbents, whereas the concentrations of natural sugars and acetic acid stay almost constant. The steam-activated charcoal showed the best sorption capacities to furan derivatives and phenolics. When the dose of the dehydration production prepared from the birch wood hydrolysis residue is increased up to 125 g L^<-1>, the inhibition caused by furan derivatives and phenolics may be removed during the fermentation of the birch wood hydrolyzate.
