The circuit switching device by the electrical contact needs the high reliability and long lifetime. The very important factor for the high reliability and long lifetime is to make condition of the short duration of the arc. To make the condition of the short duration of the arc, the relationship between pressure in the relay housing and arc duration are discussed experimentally. The contact voltage and current waveforms are measured. The effect of the pressure in the relay housing on the duration of the metallic and gaseous phase arc is discussed. In the results, as the pressure in relay housing increases, the arc duration becomes shorter. When the pressure increase, the duration of the metallic and gaseous phase become shorter with same ratio. It is effective to increase the pressure in relay housing to make condition of the short arc duration both phases.
